Friends of the National Parks Foundation (FNPF) is a local grassroot organisation that is working on wildlife and habitat conservation in a holistic way. Current projects include habitat restoration, community development, conservation education and other wildlife conservation work. FNPF works in Kalimantan, Bali and the Nusa Penida islands. 

Administration/Finance Officer - Kalimantan Tengah - Pangkalanbun 

Requirements:

  1. Smooth running of day-to-day office administration 
  2. Ensure best practices in cash management, payroll, disbursements and reporting 
  3. Ensure timely and correct financial reporting 
  4. Ensure timely and correct activities report 
  5. Accurate maintenance of all financial records 
  6. Monitor program budgets

6-in-1 Educational Solar Kit

6-in-1 solar kit is an amazing way to educate children (and adults!) on how solar power works. It’s also great brain stimulation for the mechanically minded. This kit comes with plastic pieces that make a solar airboat, windmill, puppy, car, plane and revolving plane. The age recommendation is 10+, but bright children who are younger will be able to do at least some of the building on their own or at least the attempt may bring them a sense of accomplishment and independence.

The model pieces snap together easily and the directions are straightforward. The motor was made from a simple gear and the solar panel was pretty sturdy compared to the other plastic pieces. Each model worked fine as long as the wires were attached correctly. My friend thought that the wires should have had little handles on the end, similar to those on jumper cables, so they were easier to handle and stayed in place better. It’s just that the wires were easily displaced, which was done many times at our house with all the little fingers eager to see how each model worked. It was hard for us as well since the pieces are so small and thin wires had to be pushed into a small crack in the side of the gear box.

But all in all we were pleased with the results, the experience and education that it provided our whole family. An additional plus is that the kit is totally reusable and may be re-assembled into its different variations many times over, if none of the parts get lost!

Researcher in Vietnam Green Building Council

The Vietnam Green Building Council (VGBC) aim is to continue to be a focal point for academia, government and the private sector while defining green building metrics to drive market transformation.

To meet the above aims, our primary objectives which you could get involved in are to:
  • Develop a set of green building tools – LOTUS Rating Tools
  • Define and implementing an Official Green Consultant training and exam program (LOTUS Accredited Professional)
  • Create a Green Database (products and services)
  • Continue long-term research on climate change resilience for the building environment
  • Strengthen ties with academia, government and private sector partners
  • Enhance awareness of green building practice through workshops and online resources

World Cup 2010 Carbon Footprint Will Be Whopping 6x That of Last Event

According to a startling infographic made for EU Infrastructure and a report by the Norwegian Embassy, the carbon footprint of this year’s World Cup in South Africa will be a whopping 6 times that of the last competition that took place in Germany 4 years ago. Many factors come into play – construction, travel, energy efficiency and existing infrastructure. Read on to see how each one adds to the 2,753,251 tons of CO2 (the equivalent of yearly emissions of over a million cars) that the event is projected to generate, what steps are being taken to possibly offset some of the ungreenness and how some of what is contributing to the massive footprint could actually be a good thing for South Africa.

Construction makes up a decent portion of the footprint contributing 15,359 tons of CO2 to the total. To be fair, it’s important to point out that unlike past host locations, South Africa didn’t have many existing stadiums and needed to build new ones. As you may know, cement production releases carbon at a ratio of one ton of carbon for each ton of cement, and the amount of the material needed to construct the 10 main venues for games was substantial.

Another major factor will be international travel. Since many, if not the majority, of fans will be making the trek from Europe, the fact that the games will be located in South Africa ups the amount of carbon from travel quite a bit from past competitions held in European countries to 1,856,589 tons. In addition to how the fans are getting to the games, their energy consumption while they stay at hotels and other accommodations is projected to release 340,128 tons of carbon into the atmosphere largely due to the poor energy efficiency of South Africa’s buildings.

So what’s the good news? Well, much of what has been built has incorporated sustainable features like solar panels and efficient lighting, and will hopefully be used for other events for years to come. In terms of travel within South Africa, the Gautrain, a high-speed rail network, has been constructed to transport fans around the country, and will also remain as an alternative to cars for residents.

And a plan to reduce the games’ carbon footprint is currently in progress. According to ENS Newswire, the Global Environment Facility, the United Nations Environment Programme, UNEP, and the South African Department of Environmental Affairs have partnered to secure $1 million in funding from the Global Environmental Facility Fund to install solar panels and efficient lights on the streets and promote low carbon participation by handing out informational packets to fans.
